'Add to Cart & Redirect' App User Guide

The Add to Cart & Redirect app (which you can get here) allows you to specify which page you want customers to be taken to after clicking the 'Add To Cart' button on any given product page (on a product-by-product basis). This feature allows you to show accessories, upsells, add-ons or other products/content on a regular Shopify page (i.e. collection page, info page, product page, etc.) rather than being forced to show them in a limited-functionality pop-up or modal window, as with other apps.

This app user guide is organized into 3 sections:
  1. How the app works
  2. Authorize the app in Shopify Theme Editor
  3. Create the 'atc_redirect' metafield
  4. Configure product-specific redirects

How the App Works

This app works by adding a simple "IF-THEN-ELSE" script to your product pages (i.e. IF this, THEN do this, OTHERWISE do this). It specifies what should happen when a customer clicks the 'Add To Cart' button on any given product page. It essentially works like this...
 
IF the product has a value (i.e. a URL) entered in the 'atc_redirect' metafield...

THEN add the product to the cart AND redirect the customer to the URL contained in that field...

ELSE (aka OTHERWISE) just add the product to the cart as usual.
 
The app functions on a product-by-product basis. You can set up a redirect for some products but not others. When a customer clicks the 'Add to Cart' button on a product that has a redirect in place, it will redirect the customer to the specified page (in addition to adding the product to their cart). When the customer clicks the 'Add to Cart' button on a product that does not have a redirect in place, Shopify will simply take the customer to your store's cart/checkout page (depending on your theme settings) like it normally would.
 

Authorize the App in Shopify Theme Editor

Shopify now requires that you authorize all apps to "interact" with your live theme. To do that, you'll need to launch Shopify Theme Editor (i.e. Customizer).
 
In your Shopify admin panel, navigate to the Online Store > Themes page. At the top of the page, you'll see a picture of your "live theme" (desktop version and mobile version). To launch the Theme Editor (i.e. Customizer), simply click the green 'Customize' button.
 
Within Shopify Theme Editor, in the top-left corner of the screen, click the 'App embeds' icon.

Now click the on/off toggle button to activate the 'Add to Cart & Redirect' app.
 
You have now authorized the Add to Cart & Redirect app to interact with your theme. By doing so, the "IF-THEN-ELSE" script (discussed above) has now been added to (all of) your product page template(s). Make sure to click the 'Save' button in the top-right corner before exiting/closing Shopify Theme Editor.
 
Please note that if you ever change to a new theme, you will need to authorize the app (along with all of your other apps) again in your new theme.
 

Create the 'atc_redirect' Metafield

As noted above, by authorizing the app in Shopify Theme Editor, the "IF-THEN-ELSE" script that makes this app work was installed into your theme's product page template(s). Now you just need to a) create the 'atc_redirect' metafield in Shopify (which takes 2 minutes) and b) update your product pages to include a value (i.e. URL) for that metafield (setup time varies by catalog size). In this section of the user guide, we'll walk you through the steps of creating the 'atc_redirect' metafield.
 
To create the 'atc_redirect' metafield, follow these simple steps...
  1. Navigate to the Settings > Custom data page in your Shopify admin panel.
  2. In the list of fields, select the 'Products' item.
  3. Click the 'Add definition' button in the top-right corner.
  4. In the 'Name' field, enter this text exactly: atc_redirect
  5. The 'Namespace and key' field will default to 'custom.atc_redirect' - just leave this as-is.
  6. Enter whatever text you'd like in the 'Description' field. This is just a note to you about what the metafield is used for. You could enter 'Paste the full URL of the page to redirect to upon ATC button click' (but you can enter any text you want).
  7. In the 'Access' box in the top-right corner of the page, check the 'Storefronts' box. The app will not work if you don't check this box.
  8. Click the 'Select type' button. Then scroll to the bottom of the list and select 'URL'.
  9. Click the 'Save' button.
Once you've completed the above steps, you can exit the 'Settings > Custom data' page in the Shopify admin panel.
 

Configure Product-Specific Redirects

Now that you've created the 'atc_redirect' metafield, all of your product pages in the Shopify admin panel will list it as an option in the 'Metafields' section at the very bottom of the page, as shown in this screenshot...

If you want customers to be redirected to a specific page after clicking the 'Add to Cart' button, simply paste the full URL (including the 'https://' or 'https://www.' prefix) into the 'atc_redirect' metafield. You can specify the redirect URL on a product-by-product basis.

If you do not want customers to be redirected after clicking the 'Add to Cart' button for any given product, just leave the 'atc_redirect' metafield empty (blank).

Bulk Edit. Shopify unfortunately does not allow you to bulk edit product metafields in exportable/importable product feed file. You can, however, bulk edit product metafields using Shopify's bulk editor feature on the 'Products' page in the Shopify admin panel. Follow these steps to bulk-edit the 'atc_redirect' metafield for multiple/all products:

  1. Within your Shopify admin panel, navigate to the 'Products' page.
  2. Using Shopify's built-in filtering options, filter to show only the products you want to bulk edit.
  3. Check the boxes of all products you want to edit, then click the 'Edit products' option in the toolbar.
  4. When the bulk editor page loads, click the 'Columns' button/link in the top-right corner. Scroll down to the 'METAFIELDS' section and select the 'atc_redirect' item. Once you check the box, a new column entitled 'atc_redirect' will be added to the grid.
  5. Enter (or paste) the redirect URL for each product into the 'atc_redirect' field.
  6. Make sure to click the 'Save' button in the top-right corner of the page to save your changes.
